August 27, 2012

That came around REALLY fast. In 4 days it will be exactly 1 year since I was assigned to the office. And it's already been more than 6 months since I left the office. CRAZY!! Now let's get down to business (to defeat the Huns).(Mulan)

Last week I mentioned that I wanted to quote my journal from last Sunday, so here we go!

In church today we had the visit of the District Presidency. Interestingly enough, I had already worked with the District President, Julio, and one of the counselors, Moroni Monzon, when I was in the office. They area a great presidency. I especially like President Julio. During our conversation I found out he is a convert of 5 years and has been district president for the last year and a half. I thought he was a lifetime member. However, this made me realize that my 2 highschool bishops are also converts. One as an adult and the other as a young boy. All 3 of these men have risen to the call of the Lord to serve, and all 3 converts.

"These 3 men could have been like some converts and gone inactive after a few weeks, months, or years; however, they didn't. I asked myself, Why? I talked to President Julio about this and asked, "What events happend to keep you active?" He told me, "First off, I had great friends, even before being baptized. After about 2 or 3 months I began to inactiveate." He began to inactivate for work. He worked from 1 am to 7 am Sunday morning and would fall asleep. He was simply tired and for him, it was a valid excuse. His friends helped him to realize that it was just an excuse, however valid. After a few weeks or months, discouragement sets in and they need someone to lift them up and go look for them. He said that was really the biggest thing.

"Next, he was grateful to his Heavenly Father. One day he compared his future now to his future before and saw a difference he could scarcely believe. He wasn't "bad", he just didn't have a real "future" and he is grateful for the new life Heavenly Father has given him.

"The last thing was gaining a sure testimony of this church. Once he knew the Book of Mormon was true, he knew enough to keep going. He humbled himself in prayer, asked the Lord, and received an answer.

"I belive these 3 points can apply to most recent converts and compare to the 3 points of President Hinckley,1) A friend. 2) A calling. 3) To be nurtured by the good word of God. we must look at our investigators, recent converts, or less-actives and assure that these events are passing. We can look forward to what they can become and the difference they will make in the lives of others.

Sunday school was great as well. Moroni taught about Alma 43-52 and compared the reasons of the wars to what happens in real life. In the BoM the wars began because of Nephite dissenters who no longer believed in their religion. He compared it to members who go to other churches and speak negatively of the church. He later talked about being prepared for spiritual battles. Awesome class."

As for the rest of missionary work, this was a good week! We did some work in the outlying villages and were able to find an inactive member whose family knows nothing of the church, so we'll see if we can get involved there. It's really been a great week as far as missionary work goes. I am starting to get a hang of things here in Sayaxche. The only thing I HAVEN'T got a hang of, is the heat :) We went to an aldea(village) called "Las Pozas" once again, and we also find cool things. The first week we found a little stream. The second week we found a HUGE laguna. And this week we found a pet DEER. Ya... someone here in Guatemala has a pet male deer. Cool, right?

Love you all!

August 20, 2012

Last week the internet was super slow, so I wasn't able to write a good email, so I will do what I can to knock out two weeks in one.

Last Wednesday we went to Santa Elena to have a training with the ZLs after they had Zone Leader Council. It was just with the DLs and their companions. It was super sweet. And then on Thursday we had our district meeting based upon that training. It was really good. My Zone Leaders are Elder Barahona and Elder Vestal(from Colorado). They came to our district meeting, which was perfect. It really helped in testifying about the importance of companionship study. I don't think I ever mentioned this, but back in my first couple weeks with Elder Barahona, we did not get along very well. We had a lot of difficulties in our companionship and we didn't really have many opportunities to talk about it because of our assignment as Finance Elders. However, one day we made time to talk about it due to something that had happened. That was the closest to a companionship study that we ever got, but companionship study has a purpose of "unifying companions". Because of that first "comp study" Elder Barahona and I had, we completely changed our companionship and became friends. Comp study is super important, and it's helping me realize how important a "companionship study" will be in my future marriage. Even President and Sister Watts have comp study every day.

ON Saturday the 11th we went to an aldea(village) named Las Pozas which is about 30 minutes away in bus (in my area) to try to contact and see if there is anyone there ready for the gospel. THere is a LOT of Q'eqchi', but we found a man named Bernardo who was very interested in our message and had a lot of great questions for us. Hopefully we can keep teaching him every Saturday.

As I said last week, we went to Tikal on Monday, which was absolutely incredible. Looking at these great temple and buildings you marvel at how they could construct such buildings with what we would call a "lack of technology". It was pretty cool.

On Thursday we were cleaning our house to get ready for a cleaning check and we found mice. Good stories, but definitely not going in the email. (Brock, I'll tell you all about when I get home. Hilarious!) But... we had about 8 mice in the house. 3 adult and 5 babies. We spent a good 3 hours cleaning our house that morning, and we still didn't pass the inspection at 100%. I forgot to clean the lip of the refrigerator, which was absolutely DISGUSTING. Welcome to missionary homes.

On Saturday we went to Las Pozas again and we did a lot of contacting and while we were there we found a lake! In the middle of nowhere! It was super cool! We got some awesome pictures. We were also able to teach Bernardo once again and he was able to read a LITTLE bit of the Book of Mormon but we read 3 Nephi 11 with him and he really liked it and told us that he wants to receive an answer to know if it's true or not and you can see his sincerity.

As for Sunday, I ran out of time to tell it all like I want to, so next week I will quote my journal because it's a really great entry!

I'm doing well here in Sayaxché. My mom tells me that is it currently 81 degrees with 48% humidity and light winds. The winds REALLY make a difference here. The work is going well and I am working hard! On Thursday I hit 18 months. CRAZY!!! I have to make the last 6 count! Even more than the first 18. Good news from Las Victorias, one of my investigators named Stuardo Polanco is going to be baptized here in a couple of weeks!!

Love,

August 6, 2012

Do you remember that feeling we had when we stepped of the plane in Puerto Rico for the first time? That's how I felt when I stepped of the bus in Petén at 12:11 a.m. H-O-T!

Going backwards... Well, I forgot my journal, so I'm not going to have awesome detail, but Monday and Tuesday were absolutely JAM PACKED with information... Haha, that reminded me of the movie "Space Balls" when Dan Akroyd's ship's radar gets "jammed" and he says "Raspberry!!" HILARIOUS!

On Monday night Elder Flores and I went to see Hermelinda and Jimena and it was an absolutely heart touching visit. They showed me their idaho ID cards and a whole bunch of pictures from Dora Erickson, mostly school pictures. I also showed them my Idaho drivers' license. From there, we began to talk about the gospel and Hermelinda told us how it was that she came to church. It's a really long story, but I'll try to get it all out there. First of all, Hermelinda knows Preston and Lesly Poulsen(spelling?) the ones who lived by us in Georgetown Ct... well, Sis. Poulsen picks up her daughter, Camilla, from school every day. Camilla is listening to the sister missionaries in Idaho Falls. Here in Zone 2 of the capital there is a missionary couple from Idaho Falls name of Call, who are serving as dentists. Preston knows them and so they called the Calls and asked them to go find Hermelinda and give her "For the Strength of Youth" and "Personal Progress" because Camilla is learning about those two books. They also told her that our church was close by and thus, on Sunday, she came to church. Luckily my companion and I were still waiting to enter meetings with the bishop or we likely would have been gone already. And that's how they got to church on Sunday. Without going into a lot of detail, Hermelinda and Jimena have been prepared to receive the message of the Restored Gospel like you cannot imagine. We shared with them more about the Book of Mormon, where it came from, and left them a chapter to read, 3 Nephi 11.

When I told them that I had received a change and I would no longer be passing by, Jimena started crying instantly, which absolutely broke my heart. In the blink of an eye, the incredible happiness that we all 3 had felt was swept out from beneath our feet. I testified to them of the great love of our Heavenly Father in permitting us to meet each other on that fateful Sunday, July 29th, what we learned would be my last Sunday in Las Victorias. Although it could sound absolutely ridiculous to some, I believe that God has a wise purpose in having them both here, in Zone 1, and having me in Las Victorias for those 4 changes. There is no way that it was "chance".

Tuesday was full of goodbyes and a lot of tears from different people. I can't describe it all. I said goodbye to Gilda and Marian, to Gloria, to Otto and Karen, familia Relac, Ulises, el Gato, familia García, familia Jiménez, Hermelinda and Jimena (which was also a lesson), and Hna. Oliva. It was a busy day and a very sad day, but the Lord knows what He is doing in His vineyard (see Jacob 5).

Wednesday was change conference. I cried when Elder Nelson gave his last testimony. It was a very personal and touching experience. In the new 12 week training program in the instructions for trainers it says something to the effect of, "The effect that a trainer has on his companion sets the stage for his whole mission and life". That has never been more true than it has been for me with Elder Nelson, and I hope that Elder Hatch feels for me what I feel for Elder Nelson. A profound gratitude that can never be repaid. The rest of the day was spent in a bus and was SUPER tiring!!

I didn't get to Sayaxché until Thursday morning at 11:15 and we were absolutely EXHAUSTED from the trip. My new companion is Elder Castillo from Mexico. He has been in our area for 2 changes already, but he was waiting for me in San Benito when we arrived on Thursday morning at 12:15 a.m. where we slept in the ZLs house and left San Benito for Sayaxché at about 9:30 a.m.

As I said earlier, it is HOT here in Sayaxché and I sweat like you would not believe! It's a small branch of about 50 active members with another 30 less/inactive if not more. I have been walking around pretty lost here. It isn't city, at all... but the word "village" is a misnomer. Country doesn't quite work either. It's relatively flat and very green, like Nevis... I have a picture, but it is also misleading... Little by little you will get photos and realize what Sayaxché is like.

Love you all!!!
